About Whistling Woods International

Whistling Woods International Mumbai or WWI is a creative art, film and communications institute established in 2006. It is regarded as Asia’s premier institute and is located in Goregaon East, Mumbai and it was founded by India's leading filmmaker Mr. Subhash Ghai. WWI is a private college providing world-class education in the fields of media and entertainment. The campus offers students world-class facilities such as gyms, auditoriums, music rooms, and much more. It is affiliated with the Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS).

The Whistling Woods International Goregaon campus is spread across 5 acres of land and has 14 standard sound stages, each equipped with the latest film-making technology. The campus houses five sets, including three international sets; one Hollywood set, and one Bollywood set. The campus has a full-fledged production studio with all the latest equipment. With a student intake of around 1300+ students, WWI has partnered with one of India’s most reputed universities - the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute for Youth Development (RGNIYD)  for its programs.

WWI has been rated as one of the ten best film schools in the world, in the July 2014, August 2013 and July 2010 issues of ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.

WWI has partnered with The Tata Institute of Social Sciences - one of India’s most reputed universities - to ratify all its 3-year undergraduate & 1-year Postgraduate courses with BSc, BA, BBA & PGD degrees.

Oscar-award winning alumni – 3 WWI alumni were part of the Oscar Award-winning cinematography & VFX teams for the ‘Life of Pi’. WWI alumni have been involved in some of the most successful Indian films over the past 5 years. WWI has graduated 1100+ media professionals since 2008.

WWI alumni are revitalising regional film industries. Several regional (Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Malayalam & Kannada) industries have been greatly benefited by WWI alumni choosing to go back to their native markets and making films in those languages. This has provided much-needed quality filmmaking skills boost for regional cinema.

WWI is exporting education. WWI has set up a campus in the UK, in partnership with Bradford College, called the Bradford – Whistling Woods Film School. WWI is also setting up a campus in Nigeria, in partnership with TrendCorp Africa, called ‘The African Film & TV Academy’.

Whistling Woods International is a group of educational institutions headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. One of the student projects from Whistling Woods International, Goregaon that made it big was "Saala Khadoos", a short film directed by a student called Madhavan Narayanan. As of now, there are 2 clubs that students can be a part of: The Whistling Woods International Film Club and the Whistling Woods International Music Club. Whistling Woods International has four annual events: 

  • The Freshers' Week
  • Whistle Out Loud
  • Big Pictures 
  • The Final Night. The Freshers' Week is an annual cultural fest organized by the students of Whist Growth in which a students' life is incomplete without co-curricular, sports, and club activities. WWI provides the right environment for the overall growth of its students. 

The institution organizes various events throughout the year as a part of clubs and societies to create new avenues for students to explore their interests. These include Whistling Woods Film Club, Whistling Woods Music Club, etc. Whistling Woods International has organized a number of events and clubs to enhance its students' learning experience. 

Some of the events organized by Whistling Woods International are as follows: "The Treble" is an annual event organized by WWI in which participants are made to portray themselves as one of the four protagonists in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, Frodo Baggins, Aragorn, Gandalf or Gollum. The event includes group performances along with solo acts.

  1. Celebrate Cinema-Celebrate Cinema platform allows you to rub shoulders with the best and learn about the techniques in Indian cinema over two action-packed days. It is an open event for all cinema lovers, aspiring filmmakers, media, design, and fashion professionals, where they will have an opportunity to attend workshops, screenings, various contests, and celebrity panel discussions.
  2. Inspiration-The School of Media & Communication hosts an annual media seminar series across multiple Indian cities. Experts in the industry come together to talk about the dynamic nature of this field.
  3. Aiyanna-Whistling Woods International School of Fashion hosts ‘AIYANNA’, an annual fashion graduation show. This event gives students the opportunity to showcase their work and also allows them to make a fashion film. They have the freedom to create their own unique style and are encouraged to compete with one another in a friendly way. Collections and fashion movies at the graduation shows are judged by a jury panel, which includes well-known personalities from the Indian fashion industry. The students are mentored by industry experts and veterans.

Whistling Woods International Academic & Industry Collaborations

Bradford College Bradford, UK

Bradford College UK and Whistling Woods International won the bid for a UKIERI funded project in 2007. The project, Bradford to Bollywood, will have students from both institutes working on a short clay animation movie that will make an entry in the 20th Bradford Animation Festival. In 2009/2010 Whistling Woods International Animation students developed script and story board in collaboration with Bradford Photography students. Both teams visited each other's institutes, UK and India, accompanied by faculty members, in order to create clay characters and backgrounds, and take consecutive still pictures of the characters. The project has facilitated a partnership between the two institutes and will allow regular cultural exchanges between student bodies.

Deakin University Australia formally recognises Whistling Woods International as an Academic Partner and provides advance standing for WWI diploma holders. All undergraduate Whistling Woods students can, on completion of their two-year diploma, transfer directly into the third year of Deakin University's Bachelor of Film and Digital Media with a selection in Animation or Film Majors. Griffith University Australia formally recognises Whistling Woods International as an Academic Partner and provides advance standing for WWI diploma holders. Whistling Woods students can, on completion of their two-year diploma, transfer directly into the third year of Griffith University's Bachelor of Film and Screen Media Production or Bachelor of Animation.

Students interested in obtaining the latter degrees from Griffith can enrol in the February intake (semester I) and in the July intake (semester II) and select approximately 8 courses offered by the program.

Whistling Woods International and Griffith University also run an exchange program that allows students to spend 1 semester in Australia.


Leeds Metropolitan University Leeds, UK

Leeds Metropolitan University is an In Line Partner of Whistling Woods International. Second year students from the Bachelor of Film & Moving Image Production program at Northern Film School attended Bollywood Snapshots. During their month of study at Whistling Woods International in 2008, Leeds students studied various aspects of Indian Cinema and completed a practical project where students wrote, produced and edited a short film.


Norwegian Film Institute

The Norwegian Film Institute and Whistling Woods International have drawn common objectives into facilitating student exchange programs, exchange library resources and promoting collaborations in research.

Portsmouth University, Portsmouth

Portsmouth University and Whistling Woods International have collaborated on an intensive training focused on management skills in creative industries. Every year, students of Portsmouth University's MA (Creative & Cultural Leadership) spend one week at WWI to learn about leadership for creative industries. Queensland University of Technology Brisbane, Australia

Queensland University of Technology recognises Whistling Woods International as a co-operative educational institute.
